Shiner Bock:
Ah, now we’re talking. Hello friends, today is the start of a much better week this month and we start with a beer near and dear to all our hearts here in Texas, Shiner Bock. Brewed in the Spoetzl Brewer in South Texas, this wonderfully delicious beer is something that all us Texas Exes drank while attending the school of the ivory tower along with most people here in the Lone Star State. Should I go into how this tastes? Don’t all of us know the deliciousness of this amber-hued bock? Do I need to go into the roasted caramel nose and taste or the nutty undertones? What about the lightness of the taste and smooth finish? Naw, I think we all have drank this and know by now. While this beer isn’t in my top 3 beers anymore, it’s my fall back, my standard, my crutch. Most restaurants here in the south have this on tap or in the bottle and if the only other option is the usual suspects or a bad beer pairing, this is the go to beer. I‘ve heard stories about this beer that make it even more awesome in my heart of hearts. My favorite is that in the depression (after prohibition was over) that the easiest way to market this beer was for the brewery to go out to the fields around Shiner, find workers nearing the end of their day and put cans of this beer on fence posts near them so they had something to drink. The beer is probably the lightest bock I’ve ever had, probably due to it’s relatively low ABV of 4.4%. Since I haven’t done this in a while, food parings is best with any barbeque, mild cheeses, sharp cheese and fruit pairings and spicy fried (think jalapenos poppers) or anything thing else humans consume. So yeah, the past seven beers have made the next seven so worth it.
