Franziskaner Weissbier:
My dear Munich beers, I have a love/tolerate relationship with you and your brews. Today’s brew is one of those Hefeweizens you use to test the mettle of your adventurous armature beer drinkers. Most Hefs are liked by people just entering the exotic beer world for their cloudy blonde color and smooth taste, they are a good entry point to other beers besides the usual suspects. However this Franziskaner Weissbier is a strong wheat beer that kicks most domestic Hefs in the crotch. First, this thing is about as clear as San Francisco Fog and actually has visible flow patterns in the beer once it’s poured. Second, most Hefs are enhanced with citrus, particularly a lemon and this one is no exception. My first sip was almost caustic in it’s nature and after a few extra tries to confirm my suspicion, I splashed some lemon juice in there and it opened up the flavor a lot more. This is a good beer, a lot stronger that the Paulaner Weissbier, but it does have me craving a run through the German beers sooner rather than later. Probably will have to take a break from this one before I could enjoy it, or any other good German bier. Good summer beer, best for sitting out on a patio while people watching.
